Your guide to the clearing process

Have you changed your mind about what you want to study or are you exploring a new direction for your career? Whatever your situation, Clearing opens doors to courses that could transform your future.

Clearing is about finding the right fit for your educational and career aspirations, ensuring you embark on a path that aligns with your goals. The path to your dream career may have a few detours, but every step is progress.

What is Clearing?

Clearing is your gateway to securing a degree course, even if your initial plans have changed. Whether you missed the grades needed for your offers, didn't receive any offers, or are deciding to pursue higher education for the first time, Clearing connects you with degree providers that still have places available on their courses.

This Clearing process is not just a fallback option – it's an opportunity for you to reassess and realign your academic and career goals. Clearing allows you to explore new pathways and find courses that match your ambitions. It's a chance to pivot towards a future that excites you, offering a fresh start and the potential to achieve your aspirations. Embrace this opportunity to take the next significant step in your educational journey.

When does Clearing start?

Clearing opens on 5 July 2024, if you already have your qualifications. However, if you’re still waiting for your exam results, such as A level, BTEC or Access grades, you'll find most students join Clearing in mid-August on A level Results Day. This year, A level Results day is the 15 August 2024.

When does Clearing end?

Clearing remains open until 21 October 2024, giving you time to consider your exam results, your Clearing matches, degree providers, and the direction you wish to steer your future career towards. However, specific dates can vary depending on the institution, so always contact any unis or degree providers you're interested in to discuss spaces they have left.

How long does Clearing take?

The Clearing process gives you enough time to secure a place, but it's important to act quickly once you’ve decided on a course. Exploring Clearing vacancies to find the perfect course can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on how fast you get responses from degree providers.

To make things smoother, it helps to research your Clearing choices and potential courses before A-level results day. Degree providers want to fill spaces they have left quickly, so being prepared can give you a better chance of securing a place that fits your goals.

Who is Clearing for?

Proactive applicants

If you’ve received conditional offers but are concerned about meeting the entry requirements on Results Day, Clearing ensures you still have options to secure a place in your ideal course. Clearing offers a vital second chance to explore available courses and find suitable alternatives, ensuring you don’t miss out on starting your higher education journey.

Mind changers

If you’ve had a change of heart about your course or university choice, Clearing allows you to pivot to a new direction. Whether you've discovered a new passion, want to see what courses offer better career prospects, or are looking for a better way to study, Clearing provides an opportunity for you to explore all the options available to you, before making your final Clearing choice.

Mature students

As a mature student, you might have different considerations compared to traditional school leavers. Clearing provides a flexible path to higher education, whether you're changing careers, returning to education after a break, or seeking to upskill in your current field. The ability to apply directly through Clearing streamlines the process, making it more accessible and tailored to your needs.

Career switchers

Clearing helps you find courses that acknowledge your previous experience and provide the foundational knowledge needed to embark on a new career. Whether you're looking to enter a high-demand industry or pursue a passion you've discovered later in life, Clearing can facilitate your career change and help you achieve your professional goals.

How to apply through UCAS Clearing

Applying through Clearing is relatively straightforward. If you choose not to apply directly to a degree provider, here are the steps for applying through UCAS Clearing:

1. Log into UCAS Track

Confirm your status and keep your login details ready. If you're eligible to join the Clearing, you'll see a "Start Clearing" button on your homepage.

2. Search for available courses

Keep an open mind and browse the UCAS Clearing Directory to find courses available in Clearing that align with your academic or career goals.

3. Reach out to degree providers

Once you’ve shortlisted potential courses, call the degree providers directly. Having a direct conversation can offer clear insights about the course and how your background fits in – particularly useful if you’re a mature student with practical experience.

You can also use Clearing Plus by going to the 'My matches' section in your UCAS Hub. Clearing Plus matches you with courses based on what other students with similar qualifications have gone on to study. You can select the 'I'm interested' button for the courses you're interested in.

4. Submit your request

If you receive an offer from a university or degree provider and you're ready to accept, add a Clearing choice to UCAS Track and accept the offer to confirm your place.

Applying directly through clearing

Thinking of applying directly? Many degree providers accept direct applications through Clearing, allowing you to skip the standard UCAS process. This approach can provide a more personal interaction with admissions staff, who are available on the day to talk you through alternative courses and discuss your circumstances in greater detail.
